What I Learned This Week — 2/3/13

I learned that the song “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis exists. And that it is “F*ckin’ Awesome”.

To see if you enjoy it as well, check out the YouTube video below. I must say, this song really makes me want to go thrift store shopping (you hear that, lazyhippimama?). Maybe Goodwill needs to use it in their TV commercials or something. Or maybe Savers?

What I Learned This Week – 8/19/12

I had a dream. A dream to take the cooking time out of bacon preparation. A dream to eliminate the walk to the back of the store for pre-cooked bacon in a box. My dream was to hang bacon right next to the beef jerky in a convenience store near you for easy, on-the-go snacking. I was mentally preparing myself to build this empire.

…Then I saw that Johnsonville had beaten me to it. Beaten me to my convenience junk food dream. And I found this out at the dollar store, no less! What a sense of disappointment, jealousy, and failure I now feel.

Damn you Johnsonville, for thinking of my idea before I did!

What I learned this week is that I am always a day late and a dollar short.

I’ve also learned that watching TV shows with the closed captioning turned on while on the TV Guide Channel can cause motion sickness. I like to watch Ugly Betty on the TV Guide Channel while my baby naps. But then the TV listings scroll vertically while the closed captioning scrolls horizontally. It makes me sort of seasick.

Meijer Moms Sing “Man In The Mirror”

Posted on

On Monday, I was at Meijer. I was shopping for a few staple items–lunchmeat, bread, milk, the book “The Age of Miracles” (which is really good by the way, you all should read it), diapers, etc.

It was just my 20 month-old and I. As we were walking through one of the frozen food aisles, I passed a woman with a small child riding in the cart (as mine was) and another child walking with her. The mother was singing along to the music that was playing in the store. It was Michael Jackson singing “Man in the Mirror”. I noticed because usually I am the only crazy person who sings in the store (although on this occasion, I was not).

I turned the corner and went into the next aisle of frozen food. And I once again passed a woman with a small child riding in the cart, singing along to “Man in the Mirror”. I did a double-take to see if it was the same woman. But it was a different one.

Since than, the news has been filled with stories about the Jackson family fighting over Michael’s three kids. I am sure Michael would have hated that his family is fighting over his precious kids and how public it all is. But, I bet if he saw the mothers singing his music as they grocery shopped, it would bring a smile to his face.

What I Learned This Week – 7/22/12

This week I learned that the best bubbles come from the Oriental Trading Company. We had some from them and we used up the little bottle. My husband went out and bought Miracle Bubbles brand. They suck! The liquid is too heavy and drippy and it doesn’t make good bubbles at all. Last weekend we obtained another tiny bottle which originated from the Oriental Trading Company. They are light, you get a ton of bubbles per blow, and they have a good hang time.

I also learned that the dollar store (in this case, Dollar Tree), sells pretty decent ice cream products. The store here in Adrian, Michigan recently relocated and now carries frozen food. I bought 5 Fudge Bars and 6 Orange Creme Bars for a dollar per package. Both were Arctic Breeze brand. I excepted them to be not edible. But they were pretty good. (My husband and I kept going back to the freezer for more.) So, if you are heading from the Dollar Tree home and you want a sweet treat, try them out.

Also, I learned that the Dollar Tree also sells shrimp. As I do not eat seafood, this fascinates me, more than grosses me out.

Hope everyone had a good week!
