My Great Grandmother's tombstone

My Great Grandmother’s tombstone

A year ago today I was out documenting relatives in local cemeteries for my family tree research. Most of my relatives are dead, so this is the best way for me to gather information, although it can have inconsistencies and drawbacks just as much as an Internet search does.

"Grandma" is written on the back of this picture in pencil. I believe this may have been Martha Elliot. I am guessing the guy next to her is Phillip Bracey.

I was at the cemetery for a small, nearby town. I knew a lot of my father’s family was buried there. But then I just happened to walk by two flat headstones with different surnames than what I was specifically looking for. But, luckily, I saw them and recognized them! It was the tombstone of my dad’s maternal grandmother (my great-grandmother) and her second husband! All the information I had gathered from the Internet had led me to believe she was buried in Lucas County, Ohio somewhere. One of the next things on my to-do list was to try to figure out where she was buried. And here I had found her right under my nose!

This picture is labeled "Grandma & Grandpa Bracey". But I think it is labeled by my mother, so she was either relying on what someone else told her, or the memory of what someone else told her.

And why am I telling you this, on St. Patrick’s Day? Because I believed it was a magical coincidence for me to have found her on St. Patrick’s Day, as she was of 100% Irish descent!

This picture says "Grandmother and Uncle Will" on the back. I do believe Martha had a brother William. But does this guy look like the old guy in all the other pictures too? Hard to say.

Born Martha Elliott in Stone Ridge, Ohio, in 1861, both her parents had been born in Ireland. Martha married my great grandfather Alva Goodin around 1883. They had four kids together that I know of. One of them is my father’s mother, who I never knew. All these people died before I was born.

Alva left Martha to marry her younger sister Isabelle around 1893. They had three children together. I am guessing that would have been kind of scandalous back in the 1890’s.

Martha got remarried to Phillip Bracey sometime after 1892. They did not have any more kids that I know of. Most of this came from Internet research, that may be flawed. But for someone who just thought they were a mutt until just a few years ago, discovering I am 1/8 Irish is pretty exciting!

Phillip Bracey b.1855 d.1936       I think he may have had children from a previous wife.

If anyone stumbles across this post and actually has more info on my relatives for me, please leave me a comment on this page or send me a direct message on Facebook. I would be super-excited to hear from you!

What I Learned This Week – 3/10/13

First, I learned that croup can be an awful, scary little sickness. Luckily, I learned this second-hand. My asbestos friend (who I think of like a sister)’s son (who I think of as…a nephew, then?) was in the emergency room last night with it. As of last report, he was much improved. Send your wishes for a speedy recovery over to lazyhippiemama.

The second thing I learned this week was that crafting with duct tape can be immensely enjoyable.

BEFORE (Saturday at noon)

BEFORE (Saturday at noon)

I spent all day yesterday turning a Cheerios box into a “writer-on-the-go” bag. It took me almost three rolls of duct tape to make and only one unscheduled trip to Walmart to purchase more. I put a pocket on the front. I was going to put a cell phone pocket on the side, but then I got lazy.
AFTER (Saturday night)

AFTER (Saturday night)

I have 2 full rolls of white and blue duct tape left and a slightly smaller cereal box. I have the urge to make another bag. But if I bring (or create) one more tote bag into my house, my husband might go crazy. So, if I make it under the plan of donating it to the church craft show, he can’t get mad, right?

If I don’t use the duct tape, it will just get old and gross and go to waste anyway. So I might as well craft with it, right?

Right?

(Wait, am I the only one who worries about duct tape going bad?)

What I learned this week was that you should never get the mail on Friday.  Bad news always comes in the mail on Friday.

Actually, you have now learned this.  I already knew it.

You come home from a long week of work or taking care of your kids or taking your elderly grumpy mother grocery shopping.  You are tired.  You are hungry.  You are SO grateful that the weekend has arrived.  You are looking forward to winding down and letting the stress ooze out of your body like the jelly out of a donut while you lay on the couch and watch rich people shatter poor people’s dreams on Shark Tank.

Then you look at your mail.

Inevitably, there will be some piece of mail that is upsetting, from a business that you cannot contact until Monday morning.  This may be anything from a bill from the doctor’s office to a statement from a government agency.

And it SUCKS!

So, do yourself a favor, and let the mail sit in the box until Monday.

What about Saturday’s delivery, you ask?

Oh, we won’t have to worry about that much longer.

What I Learned This Week – 2/24/13

Ya, ya I know.  I am a day late.  And $10 short.  But I spent that $10 on two good movies this week that I wanted to share with y’all.

For our 16 year dating anniversary, my husband and I went to see “Warm Bodies”.

Originally, I wasn’t interested in seeing it because I thought it was just zombie romance.  But then I found out it was also a COMEDY!  The studio bills it as a zomb-rom-com.  There was enough blood and guts to keep my husband happy and enough romance and humor to keep me happy.  I would describe it as most like a coming-of-age/first-love movie, like was common in the 80’s.  (It also has an awesome 80’s soundtrack.) With a few brains thrown in to remember that they are zombies.

My husband was fascinated by the new twist on zombies.  Of course, he also will watch Twilight with me, so I have a keeper.  We both agreed we would want to own “Warm Bodies” when it comes out on DVD.

I also got the chance to go see “Safe Haven” with my Sister-in-Law.  It was better than I expected.  I am always leary of Nicholas Sparks movies.  I still haven’t forgiven him for killing off Mandy Moore in “A Walk To Remember”.

This movie had a twist ending also, but it didn’t p*ss me off like “A Walk To Remember”.  When the twist came, I realized my mom had read the book and told me that the twist ending had p*ssed her off.  But as I didn’t realize she had already told me about it, it was a surprise to me, making the movie a little more interesting than if it had just been about the abused girl running from an abusive husband.

And now I think  I need to dye my hair blond and cut it off into layers.  Opinions?

What I Learned This Week – 2/17/13

This week I learned three things:

1. All magic comes with a price.
2. True love can break any curse.
3. I will always find you.

Can you guys what TV show I have been obsessively watching this week?

If you guessed ABC’s Once Upon A Time, you would be absolutely correct.

My asbestos friend has always enjoyed this show and watched it religiously. I catch a half an episode here and there. And if you have ever watched the show yourself, you will realize that it is just not that type of show!

I only became interested now because at the end of the first season, the curse is (partially) lifted, and everyone can remember their former identities in Fairy Tale Land, as well as in Storybrooke, Maine. This made the show more interesting to me. But, unfortunately, Season 2 does not make much sense without knowing the character backgrounds in Season 1.

Last night, I finished all of Season 1 on Netflix streaming. Now, I may have to resort to signing up to HuluPlus.com for a month so that I can catch up on Season 2. I am really looking forward to tonight because I have a wonderful idea of who could possibly be Rumpelstiltskin’s son.

Although, I must say, trying to keep all of the characters multiple identities straight is making me a little crazy. I am a visual person. I almost always enjoy a TV show/movie to the book version of the same tale. But I think this may be the only time that I would appreciate a book so that I can understand the TV series better. (Also, maybe the Terminator movies could use a reference book as well!)

Season 2 is also more interesting to me, because it has the delicious Captain Hook. Feast on a YouTube.com clip of Hook below.

Today is also the dating anniversary of my husband and I. I can’t believe he has put up with me for 16 years. Here is a picture of my very own pirate. (This is from Halloween a few years ago. I think maybe he was actually supposed to be a Rock Star. I just can’t resist a man in eyeliner;)

Now, I think it may be time for my asbestos friend to give The O.C. a try:)
